In South Africa, between Durban and JBay, lies approximately 1000km of untamed topographical and oceanic paradise, in the middle of which is the Wild Coast. To local surfers Lungani Memani, Andrew Lange and Avuyile Ndamase, it’s their home. Every year, in June, the ocean swells to its peak, hosting the country’s most impressive surf conditions. The area also becomes host to the sardine run, bringing together a vast marine bio-diversity that includes many species of sharks.
This documentary goes up close with Pro Surfers Lungani, Andrew and Avuyile, chronicling their families’ traditions and tribulations and, with insight from a hand-selected group of the best shark experts from the region, uncovers the real secrets and stories that surround the shark stigma that exists in South Africa.
This project was created with only one aim – we wanted the entire world to experience it. Since the film’s double-cinema world premiere in Capetown in December 2011, Surfing and Sharks is now touring more than 37 international film festivals around the world and has broadcasted on Television in 4 langauges in 4 continents. The trailer received over 118.000 hits almost in every country in the world to date.
